Journey to the Green Planet!!

These are some pictures I took on my Nintendo DSi on the 7th June 2009. They feature the classic Lego astronauts from the late 70s to late 80s, exploring and having adventures in my back garden.

Photo of three Lego astronaut minifigures beside a Lego spaceship. The spaceship is resting on a square stone which is surrounded by grass. Plants and rocks can be seen in the background.

Our intrepid trio of explorers arrive on the mysterious green planet. Their landing was smooth thanks to these flat stones on the ground!

If I'm remembering correctly these photos were inspired by a site my brother liked to visit which had also posed Lego astronauts exploring natural environments.

We wanted to do the same so we collected our Lego sets and both went out with our cameras. My brother took pictures on his lo-fi analogue camera and I took pictures on my HIGHLY ADVANCED 0.3-megapixel DSi camera.

You can probably guess which photos came out in better quality...

Two red astronauts are exploring a large rock with an open split down the middle. The split is lined with small white crystals. Resting on the sides of the rock are two yellow Lego crystals and some equipment the astronauts brought along with them.

"What did you find down there?"
"Energy crystals! Perfect for fuelling our ship!"

Unfortunately I remember very little of the site that inspired this photoshoot and haven't been able to find any record of it since. It's probably lost now.

Something I do remember however was people on the website commenting that the images of little guys in bright colours exploring a human-sized garden looked a lot like Pikmin from the Pikmin videosgame series. We didn't have any of the blue or yellow coloured astronauts at the time, but hopefully these images invoke the artwork of Pikmin nonetheless.

A white astronaut climbs up a tall thin rock. At the peak are two yellow Lego crystals.

"Who put the energy crystals way up there? Climbing this rock is very hard!"

I'm really proud of this photo! I've never been great at photography but whenever I look at this one I'm always really happy with how it came out. I guess the way the camera is angled makes the rock look taller than it is? The actual rock is only about 20cm tall.

[EDIT: This part is funny to read back now that a large portion of my site is insect photography haha]

It's also neat that despite the DSi's camera quality being so low, you can still get really good photos out of it!

Photo shows the underneath of a wooden garden table. Looking down from a hole in the middle are the three astronauts; their hands hang over the edge of the hole in a way that looks like they are waving to the viewer!

"Where could this mysterious hole lead?"
"There's only one way to find out!"

I really like this photo too!

It's just very cute and silly to see some Lego minifigures peeping down from the middle of a garden table. It looks like they're waving to you as well :)

A zoomed out shot of the three astronauts relaxing under the shade of a tall plant. A beam of light passes over a small grey Lego set of a lunar vehicle with a shovel on the end.

After a hard day exploring, our adventurers take a moment in the shade to sit back and enjoy the beautiful planet they find themselves on.

In case you were wondering, the Lego sets featured in these photos are 6890 Cosmic Cruiser, as seen in the first image, and 6821 Shovel Buggy which is seen in the image above. We used some energy crystals from the Rock Raiders sets too!

The Cosmic Cruiser is a great set. It appears to be one large spaceship but there's a little panel at the back that lifts up and allows you to slide out a smaller spaceship. Very cool!

This photo shows a smaller Lego minifigure with a blue shirt and long hair standing amongst some pebbles. To the left is a blue and yellow spaceship made out of standard Lego bricks that has crashed into a tall grass plant. The minifigure looks shocked!

Another space adventurer has arrived on the green planet too. They seem to have had a crash landing!

This last image is of me! Well sorta, this is the minifigure I would use to represent myself when I was 12, hence the little legs.

I remember they were some kind of space explorer who would travel around in the little blue and yellow spaceship you see in the above image, but other than that I can't recall what else my Lego OC got up to.

...

That's all the pictures for now! I actually took a few more on that day but they're not as interesting or well shot so I decided to not include them here. Perhaps I'll put them up on an extra page at some point though.

Thank you for reading!
I hope you enjoyed seeing the little guys explore my garden~
